    Erma DSM 34 rifle . . . .

Just picked this up today . . .

I posted this on the Mauser board, but figured some might see it only here.

Lud Olson shows this rifle on page 300, however . . . .

My rifle has an "H"-band and attendant bayonet lug. It appears original to the rifle.

Could this be a later modification for German recruit training so as to simulate better training for bayonet use???

Although the bayo lug appears identical to a standard K98icon lug, the hole for the cleaning rod is ONLY in the lug . . . . NOT continuing into the stock's forend. A cleaning rod cannot be installed.

My rifle is in about 95% condition with a PRISTEEN bore.

If the sun ever shines again, I'll be at the range with my new toy. --Jim

Probably not a period (pre-1945) modification (h-band and lug), but much more likely this change came somewhere in the last 60 years. Good pictures of this end of your rifle would be very useful. It would also be interesting to see what is under the band and lug. Perhaps you can photograph the stock without these parts? Restoring the rifle to original configuration is possible, though a bit hard to come by the upperband and an original stacking rod.

    Thanks for your interest . . . .

I'll be trying to take some pics in the near future.

I still think it's a professional modification . . . .Bubba wouldn't do the work as nice, I'm sure. --Jim

As I stated on the Mauser forum, I don't think this is a modified DSM 34. The use of Deutsches and Sportmodell on receivers and barrels was common during that time. You will find in the back of Jon Speeds book on Mauser smallbores, several models with one or the other name. The DSM 34's will have both. You said on the Mauser forum that the receiver only said Deutsches Model.
