    NSI stamp on A3 barrel?

Anyone know the significance of the NSI (or NS1) stamp on an RA A3 barrel?
A friend of mine just took a new RA 5-44 , 2 groove barrel out of the GI wrap for a rebarrel job and found the previously mentioned stamping on the breech end of the barrel. The letters are struck much deeper than the usual inspection marks, about 1/4" high, running with the axis of the bore. The barrel is struck twice with the marking.
He tells me that he's put on a number of RA barrels but not seen this marking previously.
