If that was a "let's see what happens" stunt, I sure hope it was fired remotely!

It would have been interesting to put a piece of wood on either side of the rifle to collect the shrapnel and record size and penetration of the pieces. I have always wondered what would happen if someone fired a DP rifle that had it's chamber drilled.

Has anyone ever seen one of the Arisakaicon training rifles with the pipe barrel fired? That looks like another accident waiting to happen.

Have heard of them. Only intended to fire blanks. Easiest clue is the real rifle has a two piece tang whereas the blank firing rifle has a one piece reciever/tang. Can't imagine what they were thinking when they made them.

Maybe a way to commit suicide instead of surrendering

Those Japaneseicon training rifles were intended for the Japanese equivalent of high school ROTC, not for issue to troops. They were not meant for firing live ammo and of course, no live ammo was ever given to the school kids who used them. I have three, and two will not accept a live round, apparently being made for a special short exercise (dummy) round, not a blank. The third will accept a live round, but I have not fired it. All have barrel bores so oversize that even if a live round were to be fired, there would be very little pressure.

(FWIW, when I saw that cartridge case, I thought it was from a pressure testing gauge, since it looks just like one.)

I had one long ago, I gave it to my older brother to hang on his wall. The previous owner had removed the rear sight, if it ever had one, so the threaded in barrel would be obviously visible.
I never tried putting anything in the chamber, but the magazine would not hold a regular rimless cartridge so I figured it was for a rimmed cartridge or a very fat rimless of some sort.

I've recently read of gallery practice cartridges for some smoothbore training rifles, they used a short case and some used a light bullet with fin stabilization. Power level was about like a .22, maybe less.

Later on I'll have my brother bring the rifle here so I can take some photos, its in pretty good shape other than the missing rear sight.
