    The Chindit war

The Chindit war. Stilwell, Wingate and The Campaign in Burma: 1944.
    By Shelford Bidwell.

Written in 1979, this is still a very good book. Not sparing any punches, Bidwell is critical of all the participants as need and gives his praise sparingly. Mostly critical of the generals. he is harsh with, for example, Stilwell's contempet with staff work, which was responsible for many needless casualties. He is equally critical of british leadership.

On the other hand Bidwell is unstinting in his praise of the average soldier, many times pushed beyond his limits in the unforgiving jungle of Burma. He is also admiring of the aviation support given by both the british and americian aircrews.

This is a good account of a mostly forgotten campaign which featured a brand new concept of 'deep penetration' supported by aircraft in a manner never seen before.

I recommend it to you as an enjoyable read.
