I have recently read "Making Their Mark" by Leslie P. Mepham (click here). I found it to be one of the best sources of info on what it must have been like for a Canadian Sniper in WWI. My personal interests come from the fact that I am the grandson of a former WWI sniper. My Grandad died in January of 1969 when I was only 8 yrs old. He never would like to talk about what went on back then, so we've decided to try and track down more info about him only recently. Very little is mentioned in his Military Service Records about being a sniper other than he was the Brigade Sniper Scout for the 28th Battalion NW from Sept - Oct 25, 1916 when he was injured from machine gun fire in the Battle of The Somme at Courcelette.

I have found it very difficult to get any records of the Canadian Snipers. I would really like to be able to make contact with Leslie P. Mepham and ask him how I might be able to track down more records on my Grandad's Sniper Unit. My Dad and Uncle have also been on the same quest as me. They have also read Making Their Mark and Sniping in France 1914-1918. They now have a real understanding of what their Dad went through.

For me, the weird thing about all of this is that my Grandad never picked up a rifle again after the war, or even showed his sons how to use one. Yet my Dad went on to compete for Canada at Bisley in 1964 and placed 2nd in the Queen's Match, then spent a couple of years on the National Rifle Team. Then I started shooting competitively at 11 yrs. and was a member of the National Team from 77-84. Shooting has been in my blood most of my life. So I guess I'm trying to understand the Roots of my past.
