    Value of Rock Island 1903

Found in local gunshop on consignment. Priced at $700. Serial number in the 43000 range. Looks original at first glance but that's about all I did today...glance at it. Stock is questionable since no marking were visible, but wood is nice enough looking. Didn't check barrel date but if you folks think that this price could be reasonable, depending upon certain details, I'll investigate further.

If outrageous for a low-number 1903, please advise. If this is the seller I think it is, the prices are almost always on the high side, but usually not off the charts.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. "The devil is in the details". If a mixmaster with WWII barrel, replacement non-grasping groove stock, refinished, etc. - the price is too high by $250-300.

If it has a correct barrel, GG stock and correct parts, well-worth the price and may be a steal.

    More information is needed.
