Thanks Jim, I also use the method you describe for "typical" hard cases. Thoroughly recommendable, as the drill chuck provides much better grip and maximum torque than screwdrivers (except the type of screwriver that has a hexagonal or octagonal shank, where you can apply a wrench).
What I previously described was the "last ditch" method to extract a screw intact, before one starts getting destructive.
AN "easy-out" is that tool which I know in British English as a "broken tap extractor". You are quite right Bert, I do in fact have a whole set of them, and have found them invaluable in cases where there is just no slot left or the screw head has snapped off.
