These are cardboard inserts for the cloth bandoleers used with the M1, the 8 rd marked ones anyway. They might work with the 5 rd strippers for the M14icon.

They keep the bullet tips from rubbing a hole in the bandoleer. They don't have anything to do with "silencing".

i'm not sure but are they same as the card board sleeve that the m 16 strippers slid into in the bandoleer, just 5 rd 308 instead of 10 223

As Chief says, they're to keep the sharp pointed bullets from going thru the cloth of the bandoleer and possibly stabbing you. The 'silence' you hear will be you not screaming on getting 'the point' so to speak.

In the first link they have the right idea but the wrong product, or the wrong photo. I suspect they have the wrong photo.

As with Caliber .30 ammunition packed in cloth bandoleers for the Springfield or M1917, there were at times a square piece of cardboard included & inserted between the two 5 round clips to prevent noise. Their photo shows Garand style cardboard inserts, but advertised as being used in the M-14. So, either the photo is wrong or the text is wrong.

The packaging for the Garand used the depicted cup style cardboard inserts to both silence the rounds and to prevent the projectile tips from poking through the flimsy cloth bandoleer. I can't recall if the Garand ammo has the extra piece of square cardboard between the rounds.

I have several cans of M80 Ball (Winchester mfg) in original mfg. packaging (.50 caliber ammo cans). These are dated mid 60's. The cloth bandoleers have the square piece of cardboard between the rounds, *and* the cup style protectors as the Garand ammo does. The cup style protectors are shorter than the Garand style, made of the M80 Ball ammo. The stripper clips are steel and are marked SEY.

As an aside, years ago, while recovering at home from surgery, I made my own cardboard inserts for M-14's, Springfields, and Garands. This was 1995 or so. I researched the paper thickness and recall I discovered that the soft drink 12 pack cardboard boxes made excellent raw material for these. I simply used existing examples, steamed them unglued, made patterns, and stamped out a few hundred of each. Glued them up with waterproof paste glue and packed them in bandoleers. Found some of these the other day and the cardboards were still good as new. Diet Coke was my preferred cardboard material, but Diet Sunkist also worked well.

    FWIW.
