RE: Ouestion on SG or Inland

The rifles stock has an RSG with O above in sling well. Is this a RSG or Rock-ola stock. Thanks in advance.

RSG would be Robert Irwin made for one of the Saginaw Steering Gears.

The R stands for the Robert Irwin Co of Grand Rapids, MI. They made furniture before the war. They first made stocks for SG and IP (IR-IP) carbines along with replacement stocks marked IR with a flaming bomb in the slingwell. Then after the IP contract was cancelled...and Saginaw Steering Gear took over the operations there..they made stocks for Saginaw Steering Gear (S'G') in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They also made stocks for Saginaws Division (SG) in Saginaw, Michigan. The added letters or numbers in the slingwell were thought to have been added by SG in Saginaw. So it's probably correct for SG carbines. These were often found with RSG and letters or numbers also marked in the slingwell. These letters or numbers were thought to have been added to these stocks at the Saginaw plant.

Here's a picture of a Robert Irwin worker checking the fit....

Often Irwin made stocks for S'G' carbines can be found with the green numbers stamped in them...

Thought to be a possible type of Julian dating system.
