OK, OK...it's NOT an FNFAL, but...

it is an FN Herstal ".223 Rem. Sporter".

Granted, these pics are of an FN FNC, but the Sporter is the same, minus the "go fast" switch. It is a side-folder, but with the smaller trigger guard.

A friend has been holding it for ransom...no, strike that, has been holding it as collateral for the owner. It doesn't appear to have been fired and there is no magazine with it (I understand it was designed to work with M-16/AR-15-style magazines). It does have the tool-kit in the pistol grip, the owners manual, the sling, and the original box.

I can find no other information regarding it other than quoted above (and that it first appeared around 1978), not on any of the gun auction sites, active or completed.

Can anyone give me more information about it, and, for my friends sake, an approximate value?

    TIA,
    Fred

According to my source who watches these things anywhere from $1800 to $3500 w/ no rhyme or reason. Sales of "black" guns has dropped hugely in the last month, so....???
P.S. there are more registered auto sears (LEGAL) for this weapon than rifles imported into the US!! Oops on somebody.

I can see where those figgers could be right for the FNC, but for the Sporter...dunno.. I am pretty sure the auto-sear won't fit the Sporter, only the FNC. AS I am NO FAL expert, please correct me if I'm operating under false assumptions.... thanks!

It's a "registered conversion device" made by S & H (Curtis Higgins IIRC). It fits the semi-auto sporters, and is one of the main reasons they're so expensive.

    Fnc sporter

I purchased a fnc sporter with a full stock back in 1988 from Ashland shooting supplies for $421.95 shipped. I sold it in 1999 for $1,700 I had dealers tripping over there self to look at it, I should have asked more.
    Rifle was a tack driver.
Yes, there were a lot of auto sear out there for the rifle,I did'n,t know that at the time. D"oh!!!
I would say $2.000 to $4.000 Good luck AZ ED out

Yeah, I'd say that is about the range I'm seeing. And I would say this one is towards the upper end due to so few, if any, rounds through it, the folding stock, and the specially-designed sight rail, not to mention the original box, papers, sling, and manual. Near as I can tell, the only thing missing is the magazine, which, fortunately, can be replaced with readily available AR-15/M-15 magazines. I love to get a chance to shoot it, but not gonna happen.... Thaks for your reply!
