Depends on the brand of ammo. Remington 22 lr ammo seems to attract dirt. Most all the .22's I get in for failure to fire or eject are filled with crud in all the recesses of the 22. Most all the owners admit to shooting Remington ammo.
Now if wondering if shooting 22 ammo in an AR with the gas tube intact, yes any 22 ammo will make the action dirty. The gasses and powder are directed into the action via the gas tube. The Air Force Rodman conversion deal with this issue by adding what looks like a gas key, but is there to redirect the gas out of the bolt via two holes. You can see the gas key but the holes that let the gas escape are not visible in this picture. As soon as I get my new camera and my Rodman conversion back from a friend, I'll post pics of the holes.
as far as .223/5.56 ammo, if the proper powder is used, the AR will work fine though again the hot gasses end up in the action of an AR. They need to be cleaned more often than say a piston actuated semi-auto/full auto type rifle.
