    SRS Check - need help

    Hi all,
I have a couple of Springfields (sporterized years ago) that have star gaged barrels. I received them from my great uncle about 30 years ago. Both have been fitted with Lyman peep sights and one has been drilled and tapped for a Lyman Super Targetspot 15x scope which I also have (with original wood box). Can someone give me information on them from the serial numbers? I haven't shot them in over 25 years. I may need to sell one but I trying to do everything I can to avoid it. If I do need to sell I want it to go to someone who can appreciate it for what it is. Well, here are the serial numbers. Thanks in advance for your help. 1285516 and 1347641.

    Bob S.

Serial number 1285516 is listed as a Special Target, and 1347641 is listed as a National Match Type C. Both were DCM Sales rifles.

    Mark,
Thanks for checking. Does this mean there is no way of knowing when the rifles were made? Is there additional information stamped or engraved on the rifles that may be used to determine exactly what I have and if they are special in any way (other than being Springfields of course).

Sounds like two very nice rifles, Bob.

Director of Civilian Marksmanship. Before WWII you could order through the DCM the then current 1903 service rifle, or you could order the rifle in several configurations including the National Match rifles .
For $50 each you can get the shipping dates and to whom they were shipped from Springfield Research Service. This requires a subscription to their quarterly magazine though.

    Johnny,

Couldn't barreled receivers also be ordered with a star gaged barrel?

You could order any or all of the parts to a 1903 Springfield in any configuration you wanted. A service receiver or a NM receiver, or a barreled receiver for a service rifle or NM rifle.
The rifle serial numbers posted above were for complete rifles.

Thanks for all of the info guys. I'll probably need to take them some place for appraisal. I won't offer any of this info, I'll just see what info the appraiser has to offer. From quickly looking around it looks like the National Match may fetch a few bucks. If I can avoid selling at least I'll have a value for insurance. I may be back with more questions. Thanks again!
