Picked up a excellent Savage Model 19 NRA

.22 yesterday. She looks hardly ever handled. Its an interesting looking gal but I am not able to find my information on her.

Does anyone have any information about this series of rifle? It is a bolt action with small box magazine, neat early "match" type rear sight.

My suspicion is that the front sight should have had a sight protector/hood over it based on how the side of it is cut but it is missing.

Any info is appreciated. Serial is 10278.

    Ernie,

I have had a couple of those rifles. During the period in which they were made there were some variations. I suggest you visit rimfirecentral.com and post your question on the Savage forum. If you do a search on the Savage forum you should find a bunch of previous discussions of these rifles.

My kids learned to shoot on mine

not as nice a condition as yours but it shoots plenty good at 50 yards and has a cool millitary look. I really enjoy mine!

The rifle came out in 1919 as you all know. It was to apporximate the look of the '03, a popular rifle after WW1. It was called the NRA Model, but not all are so marked. In 1933 it was updated with a larger heavier stock to be more like the Win. 52 of the time, with the cut down section on forearm and barrel band. Later, in the 30's, the cut down section/band was also done away with, as Win. did. After 1933 models also had heavier barrel. There were 2 sporter versions, 22 LR in 1923 and a later model. Also the action was enlarged and the sporter was chambered for the 22 Hornet, 25/20 and 32/20. There were at least 2 stock styes for the sporters.
Very nice rifle and over looked by collectors, I think. Get them all if you can!

Saw a Savage Model 19 NRA rifle

It was laying on a table at a local gun show & is the first I'd ever seen. It was in VG+ overall condition, a very handsome rifle. It had an aperture rear sight that was fitted to a flat plate that was attached to and extended rearward from the receiver bridge. It looked like the rifle has been dropped on the rear sight (which was not damaged) as this plate was bent down at about a 10 or 12 degree angle. The bolt was cable wrapped down so I could not try it but it looked like the bolt could not be withdrawn more than .75" before it would hit the plate.

I asked the fellow behind the table about the sight but he said it was not his rifle; the owner was somewhere else in the buidling; he knew nothing about it, including if the plate was bent or even the price. Oh, well!

It appeared to me that the plate could be easily removed & straightened. It was about .125" blued steel.
