I've been loading a 174 grn RN, Hornady I believe.

I looked at some 150grn and 180grn spitzers but for short ranges the speed of the lighter bullets and that spitzers carry better over distance really dosn't matter.

    Bullet weight is more important.

I got this gun several years ago and just started shooting it this summer, 1st time out it was shooting about 12" high and 15" left.I replaced the flip 300/500 metre sight and installed a peep/graduated ramp and am about 7"high now and dead centre after drifting the front. I just had a new front blade installed ,075 blade higher, to bring point of impact down.thanks.

I'm in the same situation. I'm getting ready for moose season and working up loads. I've been using Sierra Pro Hunter 180gr, flat base, soft point, new Win. brass, CCI large rifle primers and IMR4064. Am in the middle of load development between min. and max. powder wts. I don't have my load data in front of me at the moment.

I want to try some factory ammo but they are out. The ammo the stores get is usually Rem. 180gr Core-Lokt, a very good choice also.

    Do you reload?

I have a loaner 303. It has shot more moose than I have. I load the 174 RN for both deer and moose. Good for both. Does not blow up meat on a deer as much as a 150 would.

With a peep sight your rifle should be deadly.

I use a smle 1/III as my main hunting rifle. I just worked up a new load that tested well at the range.
    180gr Sierra Pro-hunter bullets
    44.5 gr h4350
    once fired brass
    federal 210 primers

Now I'm not the best shot, but I picked up about an 1.5" elevation at 100yrds over the 180gr round nose ammo I was using. 2" high at 100yrds, 0 at 200yrds.
I think just about any pointy modern bullet in the 170-180grn range will shoot good, especially in front of modern powder.
