I know nothing about these, but I did observe that it has two different set of numbers on it. Compare the cylinder shot with the bottom of the grips.

The number under the crane is the Colt serial number, and the number on the butt is the military service number. The pistols were from the Colt New Service series, and Colt continued to serial number the Model 1917 Revolver contract along with the New Service pistols.
Probably the biggest killer on the pistol was the grips which were pretty banged up and chipped as well as oil soaked. Probably a good pistol, but wasn't real clean looking.

    Johnny-

What do you think about the Apr 9,'01 patent date issue on the pistol? Do you think it makes it more desirable?

If the pistol had more condition it would add some interest, as the '01 patent date only shows up for a brief period. It is certainly a variation.

Do you think the price was too high for that piece? The blueing to me looks like it is in decent shape. The grips are banged up but then again they look used & not abused.

I think the price was just about right for the pistol, but no more.
Condition of a pistol is just what you see. It doesn't matter where the wear and tear came from. In the early 1920's a quantity of Model 1917 Colt and S&W pistols were sold through the DCM. This gave many of then a long time to get in the condition they are today as they had virtually zero collector value then, and were more a tool than anything else.
In 1924 the Colt was $14.50 and the S&W $16.15 from the DCM.

I am glad you think that. I guess I got a good deal on the auction then!

    Thanks-
