In the new American Rifleman just out, they had an article that gave their picks for the "Ten Greatest Handguns of All Time". A difficult topic to discuss to be sure.

The Colt 1911 / 1911 A1 was picked for first place (no surprise to me) and I fully agree. The Glock Model 17, absolutely yes since this was a pistol
with new technology started from a "clean sheet of paper" that was a trend
setter for many, many others to follow.

However, a few of the others I thought could have been replaced by other more worthy pistols / revolvers.

Don't have americian rifleman and have never seen it. Is Rifleman magazine the same thing?

The American Rifleman is the publication of the NRA. If not an NRA member, you should consider it.

The author's reference to the Model 1911 would be a bit confusing to someone not familiar with the different models. The author refers to it as the M1911 Government Model, when the M1911 is the military version and the Government Model is the civilian model. In 1926 the M1911 became the M1911A1, but and while the civilian version adopted the same changes, it still remained the Government Model.

In my book, the magazine ceased to be "excellent" in about 1965!
If I were NOT a "lifer" I'd NOT subscribe to the magazine anymore. --Jim

It's not just getting the magazine, but the fact that the NRA is the only organization with the strength to stand up for gun owners. The other gun rags certainly don't. Even Bill Clinton admitted to the power of the NRA.
You can subscribe to the American Hunter if you don't want the Rifleman.

I realise that Johnny, but I'd want the American Hunter even LESS!

I'm not really complaining about the Rifleman . . . it's just that I'm old enough to remember when it truly WAS an excellent magazine!

If you could read the magazine from about 1950 through 1965 (what I call the "golden years"), I think you would agree. --Jim

I did read the Rifleman from bout 1956 on. If you remember back that far you will remember that it got to where every cover was a beautiful close-up of an antique pistol photographed by Harry C. Knode. I wrote a letter to the Rifleman asking if we could have an occasional cover with something other than a close-up of an antique, as not all the members were antique buffs. I got a responsive letter back, and from then on they covered a variety of topics on the cover.
As far as the articles, there is much more known today about collectibles than there was then, and I believe we have all benefitted from this new knowledge. At that time they showed us how to turn our 1903 Springfield rifles into sporters, and accurize our 1911 and 1911A1 pistols. Today we are trying to reverse all of our handy work back then.
