    New to me, L42A1

Got her over the weekend from sunny California, a 1970 converted L42. I have been looking for a non-1971 converted rifle and when she popped up I scrapped up the small fortune to grab her.

Originally a "V" series 1945 BSA it surprisingly still has its originally paired H&H scope (from location and style of mount s/n). Scope is a '46 AKS with a non-standard dessicant screw??? (a first for me). All matching with the scope and rifle s/n even on the transit chest stapled on a card on the end of the chest.

So the quest for the kit starts. I have a cleaning kit and chamber stick, just picked up a sling from Nigel so hopefully the rest will appear soon...

No chamber stick still after all these years!
This might seem odd, but does the rifle have a distinct (but pleasant) odor coming from the stock?

There were roundhead and cheesehead 2BA screws used for the desiccation screw and three sorts of sealing washer. A red fibre, black fibre and an alloy washer with a rubber insert.

Congrats, Lance. While I haven't had mine out lately, they're pretty forgiving WRT ammo. I've shot every type 7.62 and .308 I could get my hands on through it. Just a splendid rifle.

Peter were roundhead screws ever used on the 303 No4T scope production or were they just for the L42‘s?

I don't know about during production but during the 60's, the desiccation screw was standardised between the telescopes and the little Binoculars, prismatic, Mk4 so we just got whatever came through the system. They are still a current part and the latest ones are (wait while I look.........) ah, yes, cheese head cadmium plated that you have to paint. But there are a few roundhead in the tray too.........................
