    cmp birch refinish

    what to use, to refinish ,the dreaded CMPicon issue , birch stock. i have had great success with birchwood casey tru oil on my walnut stocks,anybody use it on birch? im looking for pictures and methods for birch stock refinishing.

    works fine, go for it.

    this one wasn't tru-oiled yet (just water), but TRU-OIL works very well. Stains on the other hand tend to be problematic.

    I pulled as much of the brown stain out as possible with whatever solvents seemed to do the trick (IIRC paint stripper with xylene, and maybe even some brake parts cleaner).

    Had a bottle of Chestnut Ridge Military Stock stain around so I used that to give a red/walnut color. Followed by a couple coats of pure Tung Oil cut with mineral spirits. Then, whenever its looking a little dry I rub a little Raw linseed oilicon on it.

    This was for the stock on a SG rifle. It looks much better now.

    Here are some pics of one of the Dupage 2nds in birch. I stripped off the brown stain with lacquer thinner, then dyed it with dark brown leather dye, and finished it with tung oil. I applied the stain and immediately wiped it off with a paper towel to try and get the red only color. I was going for that orange look that the older birch stocks get. Paul
