Target Peep insert

I decided to reduce the size of the 300 yard combat peep sight on a No 4 Mk II to get more precise groups when target shooting. I did not want to make a permanent change to the Mk II sight. The solution was to turn an insert that could be installed into the original peep with a bit of contact cement. Below is a drawing of the insert and photos of the aluminum prototype and the the final steel version. In my case I have made it a .055 hole. You can use any size you wish if you make one. You do not have to have a lathe to build one, if one takes time it can be made on a drill press.

Very nice work and thanks for providing the drawing. It would seem important to ensure that the face of the back sight is vertical to the bore axis so you don’t get a distorted view of the front sight. I’ve seen several permanent bubba jobs (don’t you just love it when they make it into a “V”) but like the fact it’s removable.

JBS, good idea i done the same with all of my Enfields. I tried two different diameters for the hole one 0.059 ans 0.051 ( 1,5mm and 1,3mm ) . The .051 is very good at 100 yards but only with good light, so i use the .059. It works at 100 yards and also at 300 yards with no light influence. With the smaller one i had another problem, when i aiming the target i seen a " white ring of light " that was very irritating.

Gunner the light ring you speak of was more than likely a light or sun flair. This happens when light enters a peep from acute angles and is reflected. This can be eliminated by having a short length of area on the peep that is larger than the exit hole. Have a peep lead in of .060 for a .055 peep. This is only needed for small ID peeps. Also make sure the inside of the peep is dead black. A soot lamp works great for this.

A national service man once told me that soap was somtimes used to reduce the size of the hole on the battle sight; it was easily removed in case somebody was accused of cheating in service rifle competitions.

You could always use a PH sight 'made for the job' - add a variable eyepiece or even an adjuatable Iris eyepiece and you've got everything covered and no changes to the original sight.
