    Dear Sir,

In a robbery which was pulled off here Sunday nite [sic], the robbers fled in such haste that they left one of their guns behind and I was wondering if you have this army gun on record and who had possession of it. The No. is 987552 U.S. Model 1903 Armory Springfield [sic]. If you have it on record, would you please let me know as it may give us a clew [sic]. And Oblige.

    Yours respectfully

    Dear Sir:

I am directed by the Chief of Ordnance to reply to your letter of May 8, 1934, file O.O.474.1/6234, wherein you request information concerning the identification of U. S. Springfield rifle, caliber .30, M1903, serial number 987552 which was seized after a robbery in your district.

You are advised that there is no record in this office of the rifle referred to above. The serial number, however, is being circulated to the various corps areas and major depots and the result of this inquiry will be communicated to you at a later date.

    Very truly yours,

If the current owner of 987552 sends for his SRS hit letter, he is going to be in for a real surprise!

    Great letters, John.
