Question for Capt Laidler, indexing No.4 barrels
Peter
How were the No.4 barrels indexed to the action??? was it something like placing a straight edge on the barrel flat and another on the charger guide bridge??? or did it just relate to the extractor slot??
Of course it its not done accurately the foresight block wont be vertical thus necessitating a large displacement of the blade to get lateral zero.

Search "Breeching Up" by "Peter Laidler" in your search thinggy. I'd link to it but don't know how.
ETA Thank you, Badger. I'm not the fastest thinker- It came to me on the drive from work to the "clubhouse". D'oh! Address bar!
Anyways, there it is:

The question of aligning the foresight up with the backsight and body wasn't answered but the method we used in service has been well documented here before too. But, in short, we were taught the standard method, found it rubbish, so reverted to a more satisfactory method that I'v mentioned here previously

Yep Ed, those are the gauges we were taught to use, but they were designed by a committee. As a result, they were a tad worse than useless! Everywhere I served, we used a sheet of plate glass, two 'vee' blocks a 4" length of ground 9SWG/.144" diameter rod.

thanks Peter, Badger and others. I was un aware of that excellent thread on breeching up but it answers many questions.
As for Edward Horton I thought he was expelled.....again.....
And how was I to know that bloody giraffe would walk out in front of me...just as I was turning to the 'big boobs of the month' section of playboy...

thanks again Peter. But I just have another couple of questions after reading your excellent post on 'breeching up'. I understand the use of the breeching washers to get the correct torque or 'underturn'... but how do you ensure in the No.4 that the forsight block is going to be vertical??? is that taken care of by your method above?? and how are the vee blocks, sheet of plate glass and rod set up???
Was there another 'gauge' for the No. 4 or was the same one used as in the No.1 Mk 111?
thanks in advance.

I'm not going to go through it all again because it's all been written up before. Can someone bring it up again...., again!
