    Cooey 82 trivia

My Cooey model 82 trainer has a plain 1/8" dia. x 1" deep hole in the forend a bit aft of the action screw. What is it's purpose? Does anyone else's rifle have the same hole?

    Mine do.
I suspect it is for a sling swivel, so that a two point sling could be fitted.

Good thought! The hole appears to be the right size to accept a swivel screw.

mine does as well , id not paid attention to it before this but that makes sence - now i regret giving away that spare sling swivel i used to have ,

it does inded look to be for that purpose ,
however id probably not have fitted it in afterthought because ive yet to see a single rifle thus equiped ,

I have a model 82 with the full length stock that has the hole in question. My 82 has the factory rotating swivels which are located in the buttstock and just behind the barrel band. I have the Cooey book which shows the add for the model 82 and it doesn't mention this hole as a optional swivel mount, just the swivels that I mentioned. My 82 has a military serial number in the pistol grip.. I also have the model 82 target version that does not have the full length stock. This gun does not have this tiny hole. This gun also does not have a military serial number.

Mine has the exact same hole, same location. Also has the four-digit military number (serial number or rack number?) stamped in the base (underside) of the pistol grip. Both original sling swivels are present, too (just aft of middle barrel band, and in the buttstock), along with the original rear aperture sight.

Hey everyone, I just received info from a member on another forum about this tiny hole in the model 82. He said it was for a wooden magazine that was used in training to imitate the magazine on the Lee Enfield. Apparently, you removed the screw that held the stock to the action and replaced it with a longer one that went through the wooden magazine. The tiny hole is for an aligning pin that was on the magazine. Now that he has told me this and jogged my memory, it seems to me that I might have read or heard this somewhere before.

That sounds plausible but raises a few questions, too. Was this hole a standard feature on M82's manufactured before the C1 rifle came into use? Why not put a locating pin forward of the action screw where there's more room? The instructions for fabricating a dummy magazine (available for viewing through Marstar's web site) don't mention any pin.
