    CEF troop w/ Ross rifles

Posted on rossrifle.com, too, but these images are part of the collection of images at the Canadianicon Great War Project website: http://www.canadiangreatwarproject.com and show CEF troops w/ Ross rifles. I checked with the administrator of that site and he's fine with the images being posted[thank you]. There are a number of other photos featuring Ross Rifles there besides these ones, but these show the rifles most clearly. The photo cutlines are also from the Canadian Great War Project site.

(looks like both a Ross and an SMLE in use in this trench)

    ...

I suppose, but trench duty wasn't garrison duty, and I'm sure the officers had other things on their mind, as did the troopers.

They need no defence from us, their record speaks for itself:

Ypres 1915, 1917; Gravenstafel; St. Julien; Festubert 1915; Mount Sorrel; Somme 1916; Pozières; Thiepval; Ancre heights; Arras 1917, 1918; Vimy 1917; Arleux; Scarpe 1917, Hill 70; Passchendaele; 1918; Amiens; Drocourt-Quéant; Hindenburg Line; Canal du Nord; Pursuit to Mons.

Col. Currie (later GOC, Canadianicon Corps) was their CO through 1st Ypres.

They're marching at ease; 'collars may be loosened, equipment undone, and the rifle carried in any way convenient'.

    Those are really great photos.

Hard to believe, now, that there are none of them left.

So many questions, unanswered, so much knowledge now lost forever.
