I have a chance to pick this up from the same dealer I bought the 1905 WW1 bayonet. What are your thoughts? Rog

The Z serial shows this is a late issue 1866 used as a side arm and not issued as a bayonet, the Z marked where used by police and the fire brigades until at least 1900. Nice piece especially with the frog. My site has a lot of info on the 66 gleaned from a pile of chassepot collectors on other forums, have a look at http://www.old-smithy.info and go to the dedicated pages for a lot of info

I have a 1866 chassepot. Very well made arms. Ahead of their times. Gary

Old-smithy, what would be a good price for one of these in this shape with the frog. I don't want to pay too much and I don't want to screw a friend. Rog

Trouble here is that the frog is actualy probably worth as much or more than the bayonet, at around 100+ if in reasonable condition, it is hard to say from the pictures it looks rather distressed but may renovate with a good feed. If the scabbard number matches then you could get 200 for the pair

Thank you, where would the number be? There was a stamping on the back, but I couldn't make it out. It didn't look like a number, but like a manufacturer. The frog would be fine with a little TLC. It isn't tore or cut, so it will be ok. Rog

the number on the scabbard would be on the throat on th efrog stud/staple side. If there isnt one that may be right and shows its not an old one re used but a new one for the blade. It may be hard to find as it will be probably under the paint
