    Bren serial numbers.

    Good day one and all,

I've been puting together a register of Bren guns and tripods for the purposes of reaserch and general intrest.

Theres well over 2000 guns already registerd, but would love more to help fill in the gaps etc. I've also helped people with some basic details but alas, there are many gaps and some anomalies. Peter L and Kev G can vouch that serial numbers are not being used inaproprietly, and you never know, I may be able to give you some basic production info for your gun.

So if anyone is intrested, please feal free to PM me or leave your number here and I'll get back to you.

Hi Brian, I posted a reply to this last night but it hasn't appeared so I'm writing this again.

Your Mk2 is a early Jan 1945 built gun, probably the first week back after X-mas.

    Cheers, Chris.

    Chris

I just picked up a Semi-auto Bren built by Project Guns. I'm a newb to Bren's but I have admired them (and wanted one for awhile). There isn't alot of info so I was glad to find this forum.

    Here is my info:

    Serial number: BD 9362
    Date of Manuf: 1944
    Manuf: Enfield (E inside a D)
Type: Mk I sorry I don't know enough about the features to add anymore info

    I hope this helps.
    Barry

Thanks, Barry. Your Mk1 is probably a March '44 gun, its actually quite a late production gun. I have only 1 each of BF and BG serial numbers and I'm intrigued as to why so few of these late guns are around. I can only assume as these are the last Mk1s produced, they may be still in use as war reserve, or as the newest, the last that would have been released, but have been chopped due to the worlds shift to destroying military weapons.

    Cheers, Chris.

p.s. I didn't know this had become a sticky thread. Thanks!

My wife bought me Mk I Bren (Enfield) H9340. I understand that it would have been made around June 1941....anything you can add to that would be of interest.

Hi guys, I have a couple to add. Can anybody enlighten me as to when in the production run they may have come?

    1. 1940 Enfield double dovetail. H7398. Currently deactivated.

    2. 1940 Enfield double dovetail 4T8833 restored and converted to semi auto.

    Thanks!

Hi MGCollector, are you in the USAicon?I ask because it sounds like your guns are possibly rewelds, or you have got the serial numbers off the wrong parts. H7398 is a Enfield Mk1 (Modified pattern) from 1941, 4T8833 is a Canadianicon Inglis late Mk1m from 1942. Can you post some photos? The serial number will be found on the body, above where the locking pin fits.

    Hi Brit plumber,

I am indeed stateside. My semi is a reweld, but my deactivated receiver is currently in ruins. I made a mistake and posted the numbers off the lower section. The serial number on my semi is 3T8081. It is currently being reblued, but I will gladly post a photo when I have it back. I will need to look at my torched receiver again as I may only get a partial since the person who cut it went nuts and took out part of the number.

I'm guessing that your semi has a Enfield centre section mated with a Inglis rear, the serial number 3T8081 is from a late 1942 Inglis Mk1m rather than a Enfield DD. The rear section of a Inglis Mk1m is almost the same as a Enfield Mk1 DD so will weld together nicely. A Enfield Mk1 m pattern is diffrent to a Enfield DD or a Inglis Mk1m so would need machining afterwards. I can only assume that who ever did the welding decided that to close the 1/4" torch cut through the reciever, it would be easier to use 2 overlaping parts. This appears quite common in the US, I've seen a Mk1, 2 and 3 Hybrid and there are also a few Mk1m kits on gun broker with Mk2 fronts.

When you get around to posting your photos, I can pin point a serial number range the DDs would have come from.

    ATB, Chris.
