Announcement Hello from Canada (with pictures)

Hello all. I learned of this site through the Canadian gun nutz forum from questions I have posted there in regards to my german mauser kar98a, or so I was told. I"m more into modern sporting rifles and shotguns then milsurps (I believe thats what they are called) but I would like to learn. My father in law owned a ww1 german mauser his uncle took from a dead soilder and brought back to Canadaicon with him (oh those were the days) He let his lic. lapse so the gov't told him he had to get rid of it. I am the only one in the family legally allowed to own guns so he gave it to me. Near as I can tell all the numbers match but unfortunatly, as with a lot of these his uncle cut the stock down to resemble a sporting rifle. I know it well never be the same but I would like to try and replace with the proper stock. Anyways, I'll surf this site for a bit and see what I can learn and ask some questions soon. Thanks for reading.

Ok, so it is a sporterized Kar98a. You could find a military stock somewhere if you look hard. The Germanicon wood is hard to come by. They are nice rifles and well liked by the Germans. They do kick like crazy with German ammunition. Nice keeper. Who and when was it made? I do not understand, you need a permit to keep a WWI relic?

Not sure about who and when but it does say amberg 1910 just pass the receiver if that means anything. In Canadaicon you need what is called a PAL or a possession and acquisition lic. to own a firearm, if not you are a criminal

Take a look at Gewehr98.com. They have some of what you are looking for. This WAS a real keeper, now it is just another sporter. Sorry to be negative.

No need to be sorry. The more I read about this particular model the more I wish he didn't cut it down. On the gewehr 98 site they mention that the spandeu and amberg are the most sought after and valuable. Had the stock not been cut down, roughly what do you believe this rifle could be worth to someone. The metal and finish for it's age is quite good, assuming the stock faired as well it could have been a very good gun. Oh well what's done is done. He did use it for hunting, I hope he got a lot of deer with it.

IF you can run across the correct wood you certainly will have a nice keeper. Most of these rifles are found with poor bores. I'm guessing you have a nice bore. Century Int'l in Montreal MIGHT have the correct wood. Hard to find. The barrel bands are around at the big gunshows in the USAicon. Good luck and hold on to it.

I have read a couple of times about large and small ring sizes, what are they talking about and which one do I have. Thanks.

I'll answer my own question. I finally found out that mine is the small ring but I still don't know what that means.

The standard Germanicon rifle of WWI and II had a large ring receiver. To lighten the rifle the Germans made the Kar98a, it had a small ring receiver and saved weight. The receiver ring is actually smaller in diameter. The American '03 Springfield is a small ring Mauser. You need to find German WWI wood, good luck.

Century closed about 15 years ago when the government came up with the Money Pit gun laws. They closed and sent their inventory to Century in the US. If you can find wood in the US on eBay I don't know if they will let you buy it where you live in Canadaicon. Its a waiting game view pictures of the stocks and parts you need. Check on line and maybe you can find parts and attend gun shows.
