This excellent BBC documentary is over 70 minutes long and is part of the collection of "Open Source Movies". It is narrated by Leo McKern (1920-2002) and was made to mark the 60th anniversary of the battle of the Somme.

"They Shall Not Grow Old" is also well worth seeing.

The colourized version I have seen and it is well worth watching it really cannot portray to any real degree what these poor buggers went through but as a doco very well put together.
Of the Somme that Badger posted I may have watched it but may watch this one I have so many DVD's on conflicts and weapons I'll have to come back and watch them all again.
Of the Somme Lyn Macdonald (I have a few of her titles) writes a very good book on the battle as she said it was a 10 year odyssey compiling the book but its well put together and a rather sombre read.
Another of her works which is another good read is "The Roses Of No Mans Land" of the nurses pretty much at the front in the field hospitals not tucked away from the front line, I have another on the nurses in WWI that I have yet to read called "Its A Long Way To Tipperary".
So I put in a quick pic of her titles if you want to chase them down.

Thanks Cinders, I don't think I have any of her's, though not short of others as my wife likes to remind me periodically.
I don't know if the IWM has put online any of the 600 recorded veteran interviews she is said to have left them? The CBC did a series of interviews for a program made in the 1960s called "In Flanders Fields", some of which could be heard online at Library and Archives Canada.
