Brazilian Model 1908 Pioneer Short Sword

I picked one of these up at an auction last fall not knowing exactly what it was. The auction house didn't either. With research I positively beyond a doubt identified it as a Brazilian Model 1908 Pioneer Short Sword.

BUT, that's about all I know about it. I would like to know more about the history of it if anyone knows anything. I've done quite a few net searches for it and found a few sites that mention it and a few that have come up in auction but they never get into any detail at all.

Dr Frankenstein brings another one back to life but I have pictures now.







There are no markings at all on it that I can find with the exception of the painted number and the mark on the frog stud.

All I could gather is that Fi stands for Fábrica de Itajubá, a firearms industry that manufactured the brazilian Mausers mod. 1908 and 1908/34. The blade itself resembles the bayos that were issued with these rifles, but they are far from being identical. Here is a pic of a rather poor one, you can see the same "Fi" marking:
