    SMLE Attachment ???

Can any one guess what is attached to this SMLE?

The picture was taken this morning at The Herts & Essex Shooting Association, (Historical Section) monthly Lecture / Talk.

That's the extension for the Bren Gun tripod. It lifts the front leg much higher for antiaircraft I think.

The hard part to find is the rear handle for the Bren butt for that sort of thing. I see there are a few though. Nice Bren pile by the way. You don't see the drums every day either.

The AA tripod notion was withdrawn very early on and was flawed in concept. It was another of those grand ideas that was going to make thye Bren all things to all men. Alas, the mere notion of standing up taking on aircraft at ranges somewhat shorter than they were capable of hitting back at you made it a bit one sided. And by definition, they were up there just looking for a bit of trouble which they usually returned by the bucket full!.

    Quite rare-ish now I understand

Please tell the tripod owner to remove the load carrying harness off of it.

Unfortunately there has been a dealer on Ebay for the last several years who sells the harness as straps for the Bren tripod. I am sure he is doing quite well as he is always popping up with the ad. Buyers beware. Thanks for point this out.
