Rod Bayonet Barrel Variations

I have a early Springfield action with original barrel. Barrel is dated 05, no month. Been reading Poyer trying to figure some things out.
First alteration - Change to m1905 sights, front sight base is pinned in the front, rear sight base is pinned in bottom front
These changes were done when the m1903 sights were replaced, and my action has them.
What I'm confused on is trying to spot the signs of the "3rd variation" when the barrel was rechambered for .30-06
When the rear sight base was moved forward .2 inch the old hole from where it was first pinned is visible? or is it still underneath the front strap of the sight base?

There will be a 0.2 inch section of the front sight rib missing, which appears as a "hole" at the rear of the front sight.

The rear rear sight base pin slot is moved forward 0.2 inches.

I don't think there are three variations, as I believe all the alterations were done simultaneously on each barrel.

Interesting your rifle also has the "strapped" early rear sight base.

Read Poyer carefully - lots of errors. His "variations and "types" are purely his own and have no basis in fact.

What I'm looking for are the signs of the conversion to .30-06. What are the differences in length between .30-03 and .30-06 barrels? Is there any way I can check the chamber?

Under the serial # there are three punch marks. Would these be for each time it went through arsenal or does it have something to do with low serial #/heat treatment?

I'm just a little surprised the original barrel made it this long. Not sure on original finish on the receiver either, looks like it could have been parked a while back.[/QUOTE][/IMG]

Your rifle is fitted with a barrel from a rod bayonet rifle. This is indicated by the front sight base being pinned at the front.

Rod bayonet rear sight bases were pinned on TOP, not bottom. Rod bayonet barrels received a simultaneous double alteration from rod bayonet in .30-'03 caliber to knife bayonet in .30-'06 caliber. The M1905 rear sight fixed base (fitted for .30-'06 caliber) covered up the notch in the top of the barrel left by the rod bayonet rear sight base.

Only knife bayonet barrels originally in .30-'03 caliber will exhibit the notch on the bottom when the barrel was altered to .30-'06 caliber.
