    T99 Rear Swivel

Last year I picked up my first T-99, a Nagoya "no series" and it has the cavalry type rear swivel. Last week I found another T-99, a Kokura "20th series" and it also has the cavalry rear swivel. Were these type swivels used mainly in the early T-99? Where were the cavalry type rifles used and are they more rare?

You mean the "swivel on the side of the stock" versus "the swivel on the bottom of the stock"? Pretty much all standard Type 99 rifles have the swivel on the side. The Long Type 99's had a bottom mounted rear swivel, and a few early "no" series had special cavalry side swivels (bigger than standard loop and more rounded), but aside from the "hole in the stock for the rope sling" variant, what you have is standard.

At least as far as comes to mind....

Thanks jmoore. Yes, the bigger, round type swivel on the side of butt is what I meant. From all the ones I see at shows, they tend to lean toward the more standard swivel and wondered if they showed up more in the early series rifles than in the later series.

Pretty rare, I think, but I'm not a Japaneseicon rifle specialist. I do like them, they're light for the caliber (7.7's anyway), strong, and have fairly OK sights (7.7 again). Just haven't found a "happy" accurate load/rifle yet that makes me want to shoot one a lot.

jmoore. I have been getting real good results with my reloads. With Sierra 180gr. SP I was able to get 1/4" group at 50 yds. and the same bullet shot very good with IMR4064. I think you will need a heavy bullet as the 150grs. don't do as good at least for this rifle. I hope to get to the range and do some 100 yd. shooting. The sights on the T-99 are not too bad either.

Sierra 180gr 0.311" soft points are my "go to" bullets for 303s, but just haven't connected yet w/ anything super in the T99s. I'd love to find some old military 7.7 Japaneseicon ammo that I can pull the bullets and measure and/or load into some new cases.

Have had plenty of original 6.5 ammo, but no 7.7.
