    Leigon Post Garands

A Korean War Veteran freind of mine does the cleaning and greasing of the Garands that the Leigon Honor Guard uses. He has only been checking them out once a year for quite some time now and even though the town I live in is small, a little over 3000 people, there are a good number of funerals for the Honor Guard to participate in and the rifles get a fair workout each year. He asked me to help him go through them this week and see if any parts are needed because at the last funeral four of them did not function. What I am wondering is since these rifles are still US Government property, if parts are in need of replacement can the Leigon post requisition the CMPicon or some other Govt. entity for the parts or does the Post have to buy the parts themselves. I appologize if this question is ridiculous.

They tend to fail because they are dirty. They need a detail strip and cleaning. Are any missing parts? I think they come out of TACOM in Michigan(?). I think you can call the CMPicon and ask to speak with one of their techs. They know about the VFW/Legion Rifle Program. Good luck.

I got 6 M1s from TACOM about 1 year ago. Included were instructions advising that we would have to buy any needed parts and gave a few dealers, including Fulton Armory, from which parts were available. In fact they included a Fulton Armory price list.

You need to check out all of the rifles and make a list of the parts needed. The government wants back the rifles that they welded years ago. I checked out our Legion post rifles and found that all 9 of the rifles had the barrels welded to the receivers. We now have 9 replacement rifles on there way to our post. Make a list of parts needed and note if any of the rifles have been welded on by the government and get with Thomas Whitten at CMPicon and he will help you out with your needs. I do not know if he can help with replacement parts, but he can get you on the right track for rifle replacement. The rifles will be comming from TACOM, not CMP. Hope this helps.

Blanks will foul the gas system terribly. You need to disassemble the gas system and clean it very well. Inspect the gas port and make sure it is clean and at full size. You can remove carbon with a small drill bit but make sure you remove no metal just the carbon.
