'The flange on a Lanchester and Sterling barrel (which was developed from the remaining stock of 4,000 Lanchester barrels) act as a beating or stop face for the bolt. No beating face and the barrel is toast! '

Regarding Peters post above. I have seen & examined a fair quantity of sterling barrels, that were converted from lanchester Barrel stocks. The proof marks have a Kings Crown Proof Stamp on them. & there was a bit of a 'Thing' going on with some of these barrels in Service at one time.

Pete, do you recall 'something' in EMERs concerning the machining depth of chambers being SLIGHTLY too deep? it affected SOME SMGs I believe. But not all for some reason. These were passed for usage as spares & were marked with a white spot of paint to identify them.

Time dulls the memory as to what EXACTLY this problem resulted in during Service use. But it couldn't have been much, or they would not have been released to be used to supplement 'Normal' Spares Stocks?

I remember that thing Tankie. It was all to do with chamber specs. For those others, if you already know this or don't appreciate shaggy dog stories that go off at a tangent, look away now........

The UKicon Mil chamber was very slightly different to the commercial barrel chambers. You mention the length and this is probably the reason but it was also to do with the angle of the end of the chamber just before the leed. Anyway, there were 60,000 brand new barrels in Ordnance just taking up space and Ordnance wanted to dispose of them and Sterling had been hankering to buy them at a (virtually) scrap price. These barrels had been taken from the Indian order fiasco guns. We had already stripped the guns and were using the parts - hence the crackle finish butts and return spring caps that were common at the time. Anyway after the MoD had sold 10,000 back to Sterling* it was suggested that these barrels could be taken into service providing that they were suitable trialled and tested and marked. They passed the test using UK made Mk2z ammo and were accepted but there were conditions......... Our mutual pals Chris Xxxxxxx and Dennis Wxxxxx were involved in this trial

    * more to it than that of course because Sterling could make barrels extremely cheaply and fast and rifle 6 at a time per machine. So the price they were prepared to pay was peanuts. So they got 10,000 for peanuts while the MoD were paying the trade cost for new barrels from Sterling (Enfield had been rumbled pirating them and had been ordered by Judge Denning to cease forthwith). But 10,000 new commercial type barrels were pure profit. These commercial barrels couldn't go to Canadaicon or NZicon Military who used UK MoD spec short chambers.

There, another bit of Sterling history

All I can say is that it is quite late but I know of some later examples.

Vince, your Q, thread 107. I feel that - once again on this and the Bren forum - that most of the questioners are simply transient passers-by. Once they've asked, we've answered, they just wander off elsewhere without a thanks or bye-your-leave. Wiser but have donated nothing in return. I've said it before and will no doubt say it again........... Frustrating or what.....?

Yes, it’s a little disappointing, Peter. Part of the territory that comes with these forums I guess.
