Field Service Carrying Case
I found this nice box the other day. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that it carried some kind of tools for the M14 Rifle. Does anyone know what tools were carried in this box. The box measures 18x5x2 ins.
Thanks, Greg V

Nice box. They did it right back then.

When I started in the business full time in 1976, I had about 15 sets of these gages, all in the boxes. The sets were released from APG.
In those days it was difficult to get $50.00 for the set, so I priced them at $45.00 and sold them at gun shows. At today's rate that is somewhere between $170.00 and $200.00. What a dream!

I found the boxes in Idaho last week. I picked up two of them just because they were so neat. There were a stack of them, all empty of course. Now I guess I have to try to find the correct tools.

1.6455 inch for use with the Bolt.Field Test.I still have my original complete set that I paid $200 for in 1980.
You got ALL the Lab Test cards and a pair of bolt roller pliers and the Allen wrench for the front sight screw in with the box and gauges etc too.

It has been years so I am going by memory, but I think the box needed an alteration cut to fit the Roller Pliers. I had one that had been altered.

Bolt roller pliers
Hi Bill:
The bolt roller pliers were in the cardboard box that had everything else packed inside. They didn't have a routed out place in the "Case Field Carrying".Some later versions of the kit came without a flash hider alignment gauge but the wooden case still had the slot for it.
It wasn't all that difficult to find the 1.6355" GO headspace gauge but the 1.6375" NO-GO was a little hard to track down and buy.I wound up using my Canadian Armed Forces issue 1.6315" in as a go gauge and a 1.6350" as the No-Go as I was only concerned with target shooting and not a sloppy chamber to make allowances for cruddy combat conditions.
That 1.6455" Field Rejection headspace gauge was to be used with the "Bolt.Field Test" to determine serviceability.
Cheers,
John R.
