krag carbine ?

I saw a Krag carbine the other day but was not sure about it. It had the humped handguard..I forgot about the C stamp on the rear sight and did not look for it. It was an 1898 model and the serial number began with 10. It had a beat up stock and the cartouche was hard to read. It also had a bayonet lug. There was a slight bend in an otherwise decent looking barrel. It also has the Model 1901 rear sight.

I am blind in my right eye and I thought I was going blind in my left eye..the shop owner took a look and confirmed the diagnosis. Eeeeewwww..is right.

If it was a carbine, how did it have a bayonet lug ?

That I do not know..most likely a cut down rifle...it was a carbine length barrel. I saw it again today..SN#342904, receiver marked 1898, cartouche on stock 1901, circled P, the hand guard was humped in front of rear sight. Rear sight was a rifle sight. I do not know how the front sight was installed..not sleeved....Model 1901 rear sight. The stock looked like the curse of a thousand dings. The barrel was stepped down to accept a bayonet. The stock was square cut for the bolt handle. There was a small S stamped on top of the stock just ahead of the butt plate..butt plate has the trapdoor. I recall a pronounced angle on the front of forestock to accommodate the front band/bayo lug. Also the finger groove on the left side was shorter than the finger groove on the right side. School gun?

Sounds like it is a constabulary carbine. Carbine barrel turned on the end to take a bayonet. Stock cut to length to refit the bayonet lug. Would be a good rifle at the right price. Barrel can be straightened. I'd buy it.
