Care of Leather Scabbards

Picked up a Spanish bayonet this morning that has a leather scabbard. It is pliant and flexible but feels a bit on the dry side. The blade was coated with cosmoline so I'm assuming this is present on the inside at least.

The last leather I treated in any way was an old baseball mitt and that was so long ago I don't remember what I used. I'd like to preserve the leather so it doesn't crack.

Any suggestions?

Use simply a leather oilo for saddles. It is good to work in the leather and stays very long. Please use no oil or creame with silicone oils in it.
Let the leather soke the oil as long til it dont soke anymore oil apply with an brush or dip it in the oil it works very good and dont harm sewings or metal parts.

I use Pecard antigue Leather Dressing. I have some old Frogs I use it on and it puts the oils back into the leather and will make it supple.

Yes to Pecards...no to Neetsfoot oil,mink oil,or any other products derived from tallow or other animal by products.They will attract and feed bacteria,and although the leather will seem better at first,it will begin to rot at an accelerated rate.
