    Spanish M1916 Cal 7.62

Recently examined a Spanish M1916 short Mauser stamped CAL 7.62 on the lh side of the receiver. Were these rebarreled or rebored with the chamber sleeved? Not an FR7.

Rebarreled. Special 7.62mm round. A steady diet of Win/Rem .308 ammo will destroy the 1916 carbine.

Au contraire. You can shoot all the 7.62x51 NATO you want, and you'll probably never be able to shoot enough .308 to do any damage. Standard level ammo, that is. There are some munitions loaded so hot as to pop a Ruger #1, but your normal run of the mill ammo will not be loaded to anywhere near what this rifle has proven to be able to handle. That is one of those "ott, better safe than sorry" myths.

Au contraire, for sure. I have personally seen and handled several used M1916's that had been fed a steady diet of 7.62mm Milsurp ammo. All were loosey-goosie and a danger to the shooter. The Spanish developed a 7.62mm Special cartridge for this handy carbine. Something like .30 Cal Carbine velocity. It is most fitting that their Army figured that out, not me. Go find yourself a nice M98 and barrel it into 7.62mm, that's the way to go.

The Spanish did load a reduced version of the 7.62 NATO I think they called the Cetme round. Only loaded to a working pressure of 40,000 to 45,000 psi with a 150 gr bullet for these rifles. The same pressure as the 7x57 that they were originally made in. Use of standard NATO rounds or .308 ammo is NOT recommend.
