blueing on a 1917

A while back I got a eddystone. The person I got it from said that he got it in 95 from the importer and that he cleaned the red paint off of it. It is a Eddystone with candian markings on the stock and the importers name swan VT under the barrel. He said that it was original blue! But it is not it has been reblued. did any of the importers reblue 17s when they brought them into the country. or could it be a arsenal reblue it does not look like the black paint you sometimes see on Brittish rfinished ingles hi powers

a picture would help...most 17,s that were rebuilt by the US military were parkerized.
dark black blue would be correct for a Remington..light grey blue would be correct for a Winchester. mix of both for Eddystone.

Why do some look original except have a light parkerized section in the middle of the rec? like a stripe?

the ends of the receiver are annealed, to prevent cracking...ALL m1917,s had this done.
if i remember right the dipped each end in molten lead.
only a few late 1917,s were parkerized..most parkerized 17,s were refinished during rebuild.

Most likely re-parked by the US. If indeed re-blued then perhaps UK or Denmark? Homeguard use? These things have real history behind them. Your buddy removed the red band paint? Too bad for you!

At the time of manufacture, Remington was using rust blue on their firearms, and Winchester was using niter blue on the receivers and small parts and rust blue on the barrels.

I have a Century Int'l import that has been reblued after the stamp was applied. Whether Century did it or someone afterwards is open to conjecture.
