It's great to get them started young. Proper training and respect for the responsibilities of firearm ownership is the way to go.

You may have created a future carbine lover. I was pretty close to that age (maybe a little younger @1960-62) when I fell in love with the carbine. My dad and uncles had always talked about having them in the Pacific. Then my older cousin (a US Postal Inspector who became my gun mentor and eventually got me to go into Law Enforcement) got a DCM/NRA carbine to carry on duty where he was stationed in Hazard KY (Back-up was a long way away). It was the first center-fire long gun I ever fired. I remember we were at a quarry shooting and I shot a "Bubble Up" pop can from about 75 yards, hitting it on my 2nd or 3rd shot dead center from a kneeling position. That was the beginning of my need to possess at least one M1 Carbine. I was in love with that little gun!!!! It was when the were still steel, and I actually kept that can for many yearss (even after I was married). Recently he bequeathed his immaculate S&W Model 29 8 3/8" to me.

I remember my first M1 carbine. I was 21 and bought it at a Houston gun show for $125 back in 1971. Story was it had been sold by a police officer who upgraded to an AR-15. That carbine was sold off long ago, but I have 9 others now to replace it.
P.S. , I remember "Bubble Up"! showing my age. Wasn;t it like 7-UP?

Showing your age? You baby, I'm a year older then you.

I didn't even have to buy my first, I was 19, it was an issued M-2 for my boat. But then again I wasn't shooting at Bubble Up cans either. And like your police officer, I upgraded to an M-16 on my second tour. At the time I never thought I would collect them later on.

Yep, Bubble Up was a 7 Up knock off wannabe. To get the group in the picture, I used the directions to "hang" the action in the stock from the CMP web page. It really works. Reduced group size by a third or so, if I remember right.
