    Pattern 1888 markings questions

I just acquired an Enfield-production Mk I 2nd pattern 1888 bayonet for my new (to me) '96Enfield MLE (Canadianicon-marked). It's in amazing shape, unsharpened, and is 8 '96 dated. I'm curious about the regimental markings on the bayonet and scabbard. Both are marked M.R. over 79. I would assume the Canadian Mounted Rifles would have their bayonets stamped CMR, rather than just M.R., or would they? Other possibilities?

    Thanks in advance.

For the period in question I expect you'd be looking for a unit that was involved in the Boer War. I've had a quick look and I believe Mounted Rifles would be closest to the mark, especially if you picked up your bayonet in Canadaicon. The markings would have been for regiment weaponry records and used like a rack number. I suspect at home they would have been known just as Mounted Rifles and only when they went abroad would they adopt the Canadian part. I've heard that those sort of administrative details were done a little more haphazard back then. Cheers.
