    Krag hunt again

Well, it's getting to be that time of year again. Planning the family elk hunt. Last year was great in the Centennial Range, west of Yellowstone. Great campsite, fine weather, beautiful scenery, we even had cell service within 5 miles of camp! but no elk were harmed in that hunt. This year my little brother Paul wants to hunt N. Idaho – we're looking at Independence Creek area south and east of Lake Pend d' Oreille. There are roads and trails, but mainly it is all up and down, thick woods.

Paul sort of half-raised these two brothers, Steve and Nathan, who turned into mountain men. They like the area because most hunters stay close to the road and drive the elk into the roadless areas. Of course it will be a challenge.

An old friend of ours from when we were kids tracked Paul down and he's coming too. Said he always wanted to hunt elk. Now we're all over 60! How did THAT happen? Anyway, level ground is pretty scarce in the area and most of it has been pre-empted by outfitters.

Anyway, thick woods, 80 yards will be a long shot. Guess which rifle I'm carrying? Dam sure NOT that 7-mag 98 Mauser with its giant scope. I'll probably take along a #2 Rolling Block in 45-70 as a backup. It's a rifle I know and trust.
