What was the purpose of the two strap loops at the top of the M1 Carbine Jeep scabbard. The only picture I can find with the strap shows one long strap, and wondered if the extra loop was to allow the strap to be wrapped more than once if needed.

There were supposed to be two straps. Sometimes you get them sometimes you don't.

Originally they were designed for cavalry on horseback. The straps were used to attach it to the saddle. The straps were a hold over.
