Newbie Question About Bore Condition

Only been at this Enfield addiction for a few months now but I'm learning more everyday. In describing the condition of a bore what does frosty mean? How much does it affect accuracy?

"Frosty" is a euphemism describing uniform light pitting from corrosion. Kind of like calling exterior rust "patina". The effect on accuracy is variable depending on how much barrel steel is gone.

Frosted means rusted. Just not to the point where the rifling is no longer visible.

It may not affect accuracy, or it might. I've given up trying to predict it! As an example, I've an M1 Garand barrel that's hideous, but still shoots as well as most match barrels.

Crown, and somewhat less so, throat condition, of the bore will influence accuracy. Plus, bedding, screw tightness, sight function, operator, ammo, bore size, etc., etc.

First think of a brand new barrel bore as smooth and flat as a piece of glass.



Now think of a barrel bore that has fired corrosive ammunition and was not cleaned properly, the bore becomes "frosted" from microscopic pitting.



A *frosted bore gets dirtier and picks up copper faster than a smooth polished bore.

NOTE: *Not nearly as enjoyable as a "frosted" mug of beer at Hooters.

traindriver, Frosty is a marketing term for me. It just doesn't really describe anything and there is no measure for comparison. The range could be from "strong rifling, but dark" to, well, anything worse.

You can have a 'frosty' or any other bore across the whole spectrum to bright, shining and gleaming. So long as it's not unduly rusted or pitted (plus several other faults), then in those cases, if it passes the gauge tests, the acid test is the accuracy test. If it passes the accuracy trest criteria, then it's put back in the armoury. I realise that this isn't quite what you want in your rifle rack at home but that's how it works in the Service

Whoh! We are not much for weasels out here, we do have lot's of coyotes, though.
