    .455 MKII cartridge dimensions

Does anyone have a link to a drawing or table of dimensions for this cartridge??

In particular I would like to know the average rim thickness. If someone has some cartridges they could measure I will accept that.

    Thanks !!

    Thanks Jim,

That is what I needed to know. I have a S&W that was .455 MarkII originally, went to Canadaicon for WWI, and made it back here where someone re-chambered it to .45 Colt. Headspace on it now is .78 +/- just like a .45 Colt.

    Thanks again,

    Emri

You know, I would probably rather have it in 45 Colt or definitely 45 ACP than 455. The big one can give a wallop. Remember, they were the big army gun at the time. Lots of knock down.

You may find that, depending on how the rechambering was done, it may shoot both .45 Colt AND .455. Whilst thinner, the .455 rim is larger in diameter. So if the chambering was done carefully, the .45 Colt reamer made small recesses on the rear face of the chamber, but left enough undisturbed to support the shorter round's rim. I've seen several done that way, and own and shoot one as well. Doesn't seem to hurt accuracy, BTW.

Whoever did the work did a good job. (I've seen some rather poor workmanship on too many to remember) But he turned the rear of the cylinder to get the headspace. The lack of a serial number on the rear of cyl. is what got me to really inspecting the pistol closely, rather than just a cursory examination. (It is not mine, belongs to someone else) When I get a chance, I'll take some pics and let y'all experts cypher the various markings.

    Thanks for all y'alls input,

    Emri

    455 Mark II

I also have a Model 1915 S&W revolver that was rechambered to 45 Colt many years ago by a gunsmith. I use the old KDL rear sight which has windage and elevation - uses the top screw hole in the side plate. Also replaced the old mainspring with a new "N" mainspring, nice improvement.

There is quite a variation in the rim thickness of the 455, 455 Colt and 450 - the WW2 Mark II has around .033 to .035 while the 455 Colt will run from .041 to .043Attachment 15391
