Great thread, mine is a bring back. I was Infantry in Vietnam and during my tour SKS-s weren't to be found in South Vietnam. I was there 68-69 and we faced NVA carrying only AKs, RPDs, and RPGs. I got mine while on a mission into Cambodia from a solider that no longer needed it. I'll have to dig it out and check out it's markings. My two son's loved shooting mine so much I had to buy them each one so I could get mine back.
As a side note; I left Oakland Ca. with the SKS on my shoulder and a Tokarev pistol in my brief case and boarded a commercial jet. Times sure have changed!

I have a type 56 sks that I got from a friend when he passed away. It was never cleaned. Still had tons of cosmolineicon inside the gas tube, receiver, bolt carrier group and of course all around the stock. I literally had gobs of it flying out of it when I first fired it. Was rather inaccurate as you can imagine. Mine was made at factory 26. Im not particulary fond of it. I am already well versed in the Kalash system and can't see keeping two guns in that caliber hanging around especially when the chinese one is nowhere near as accurate as the Izhmash AK-100 series rifle. Oh and did I mention it still smells like cosmoline after 5 hours of deep cleaning after being detail stripped to the bone and liberally soaked in hoppes #9?

Sounds like your lucky it didn't detonate in your hands. Usually the best things to use on cosmolineicon is, heat, brake cleaner, acetone, etc. hoppes #9 doesn't work too well.

Yeah i am lucky. I told my friend who originally bought it that he had to shoot it first and I was going to stand about 10 feet away, lol! It was his gun and he wanted to fire it like 10 seconds after he bought it. So we went out of town to the middle of nowhere blm land and shot at a dead stump that had a paper target stapled to its side. I did use some brake cleaner to get the last of the cosmolineicon out. Thanks for the tip WarPig1976.

    sks with jungle stock

recently bought a SKS with bakelight jungle stock no bayonet
this rifle also has a bi pod that seems to be original to the 1963 date of manf

thin steel legs rubber tip ends locks to the rifle with 4 Allen head bolts
    metric

has any one else run across this type of bi pod or is it some after market item ??

here are the pics of the new SKS factory 26 date of manufacturing 1963 hope the quality is good enough to help me in identifying the Bi Pod

if it is an after market then its a perfect fit there is a groove under the mounting bracket that accepts the cleaning rod

thanks in advance for any help

I don't know who made them but the bipod and brake are aftermarket and so is the stock. The stocks can be had cheap because SKS's where never issued with them. The chicoms have good marketing...

Chinese sks did not come with a bi-pod , quite often the VC would use the bayo a mono pod .

Read through the first post and am still confused as to date of manf. and any other info possible. What kind of bayonet, spike or blade?

The gun came with a synthetic after market stock , but all numbers on the metal match

    Here are some pictures:

markings on right side of receiver (third digit is an 8)

only other numbers are on the bolt

The only factory marking is on the back of the rear housing
I can make out the second number as a 6

The rear housing itself is like none I've seen as an OEM part
    milled integral scope mount

the other "oddity" is the muzzle break/ flash hider

any info would be greatly appreciated

Where to start,,, The receiver cover is an Aftermarket piece. Bubba tried to port the barrel AND he cut the tip of the barrel off so you can't mount a bayonet if you wanted to. The dating code wouldn't work because the carbine isn't military surplus it was made solely for export. A lot going on with this carbine.....
