    4.9 Inland

Does this look as it should guys. #4941055 with a 1/44 bbl. I'm not sure as I have not seen one in that serial range before. I'm wondering about that handguard, where it mets the barrel band, I thought that was a WRA look. Any thoughts appreciated. Attachment 17908Attachment 17909Will try for better pics from the seller. Thanks. Mike.

Mike, that looks like the Winchester bullnose handguard I have. It is on an Inland STOCK (but QHMC carbine).

As a side note, if you buy the carbine from that seller, do NOT buy the carpet it is laying on!

Mikey, it does look like a Win. handgaurd. It looks like a 10 shot mag as well. Pics a little short on detail but looks like an original rifle and sling to me. Are you buying it?.....Frank

Is that a Type I band? I'd have to say that is a put-together carbine and is not as-manufactured.

Thanks guys, it was the 1943/44 look of the carpet and sling that made me look closer at the Carbine. Any Carbine down here with a C tabbed sling is worth looking at. I still go with the feeling that some Carbines that didn't get back to the States didn't get re-built and that the handguards were a weak point, easily damaged .... so ... you may often find a wrong handguard on an otherwise O.K Carbine. I am thinking of buying but will await better pics. Will let you know how it develops. Mike.

    Why would you say that?

For one thing, I always forget Mikey's location, which lends itself to finding authentic carbines - "I still go with the feeling that some Carbines that didn't get back to the States didn't get re-built and that the handguards were a weak point, easily damaged .... so ... you may often find a wrong handguard on an otherwise O.K Carbine." (Mikey51). I tend to look at them like the ones guys find here that have really been through the mill! Also, a 4.9 should not have a Type I band as far as I know, although as we all know, nothing is impossible with carbines. Then you have the hand guard, but it's true that it probably is a field replacement.
I meant to come back and say this before now, but got involved in other things. In any event, not enough is known for anyone except Mikey to make the call.

Type 1 and type 2 barrel bands were used in the 4.9 mill range.

I still have Inland 5,061,238. Thought to be original except for me putting a better stock on it. I did keep the cracked one that came off. The old stock had no rebuild stamps or P testing or firing proof stamps, but it's had it. Barrel date 3-44 marked B.I. made by Brown-Lipe-Chapin Division of GM. Stock Overton low-wood with CC, Hand guard shallow groove. When checking to see if the unmarked type II band was correct was informed that it was, but in this range some were still found with the type I/IA bands. Rear sight a type I flip with .U. marked leaf, chisel type staking on the right side dovetails only.... thought to be part of the shipment of leafs and bases sent to Inland by Underwood prior to the making of this carbine.
This was my 2nd carbine and a hard one to ID back when being new at this game. The Transitional Inlands are a treat.
I have a picture of it after freshly oiling the stock, but the brite overhead light makes it look varnished. It looks much more original now as the shine has dried down.
Some day soon I hope to get better updated pictures of many of my carbines.

    To Mikey,
Some of the early Hand guards had more meat on the front end. Though the pictures look as though it may be a bull nose WRA, I'd still ask for any possible markings on the bottom. I have RMC and QRMC Hand guards here that also show pretty blunt-tall front ends. Even some of the early type I OI Hand guards with the stamped bomb symbol are pretty chunky on the front end.
Do what you do best........... Investigate.

    Cheers Mate,
    Charlie-painter777

Will do Charlie. Can only get bad pics from this guy at the moment but I trust my "gut feeling". Looks like Highwood, oval cut, O.K on a 4.9 ? Have seen much earlier and much later but none in this range. That's why I am being careful. I like the flipper still being on it. The sun is starting to appear here so that must mean snow for you !! Cheers Bud. Mike.
