Copper Solvent

I have a nice 1903A3 that has a bore LOADED with copper residue. What is the best method/product to remove the copper without damaging the stock or metal finish? Thanks.

So far, have tried M-Pro7 Copper Remover (repeatedly) with marginal results.

I use sweets 7.62. I dont mess with it though...maybe 5 mins in the barrel & then a very thorough clean out once finished.

If you have access to an Outers "foul-out" reverse electrolisis set up that's the way to go. Barring that, degrease the bore and use a non-oil based nitro fouling solvent. After that, plug the muzzle with a rubber stopper and fill the bore with house-hold ammonia cleaner (5% solution) using a turkey baster syringe. Fill to the chamber and stand the rifle on its muzzle over night. In the morning uncork it and watch the blue copper solution run out. For seriously fouled bored do it two nights in a row or until the solution comes out clear in the morning. Dry the bore and lightly oil to prevent future rust. This really works and there is no damage to the bore like letting other ammonia-based cleaners sit in the bore overnight. This often restores accuracy to rifles thought to have been "shot-out" when really they are copper fouled.

A lot of us in Canada, use a US made product that is marketed by Sharp Shoot R Precision Products, called WIPE OUT. I can testify that it works well, is safe in both carbon and stainless steels.

It can cause some discoloration on stock finishes if care isn't taken to keep it off. It is a foaming cleaner that is sprayed into the bore with a plastic tube. I usually put some dross in the chamber mouth as soon as I withdraw the insert tube. Always keep the muzzle pointed down. There is also an accelerator for really tough cases. The best thing about this stuff, is you foam up the bore and walk away for a couple of hours. This stuff is sold by a company out of Paola, KS. The website is Hasbro Toys, Games, Action Figures and More... The can says it's a powerful anti corrosive that prevents rust. Haven't tried it with corrosive ammo yet.

Just so you know, I as well as many others use this stuff in some high priced shooting irons. One guy has no problem using it on a $30,000 shotgun. I of course am not a man of means by no means and just stick to the stuff in my price range. Still, I treat my firearms as well as my grandson and enfield303t can tell you about that. If I endorse a product like WIPE OUT, I do it only with a lot of experience and testing. I've gone the full gammut of making up Ed's Red, Sweets 303, JB and Motty's bore paste, Iosso, Barnes CR10, Butch's bore shine, Hoppes #9 copper solvent, You name it. I more than likely have it and quite often in quantity. Nothing has impressed me more than the WIPE OUT system. It even lossens lead. They do have a very effective lead remover for those that like to shoot cast bullets and I can attest, it does everything it says it will and without all of the elbow grease. The only other method that "might" work better, is as mentioned above, an electronic cleaner.

I almost forgot, they also have a brush in product that doesn't foam and is easier to control and doesn't drip out the end of the barrel. It goes about 3 times as far as the spray foam although it doesn't work any faster. The one thing it does do is allow you to use a brush and loosen up the crud a bit faster.

I can recommend "Eliminator" bore cleaner. I usedit on my A3 with excellent results, used as directed.
