    India Pattern P-1943 MkI* oddball

Picked up a 7/42 dated India Pattern P-1943 MkI*. Conventional wisdom says it should be a cut down P-1907 with a fuller still present on the blade. After much head scratching and research, I might have an oddball. This bayonet was produced in the MkII pattern, but is marked MkI*. May be a transitional due to 7/42 date. marked: Crown
    G.R.I.
    MkI*
    7 42
    R.F.I.
Has SI over 355 and FI over 110 and a 28 on the backside. Will try to post pics in AM. Came in with a batch from Egypt. Very interesting. Any further info would be appreciated....

Indian markings can be more than a little slap dash, with a lot of MkIII's marked as II's and the missing of the * mark for ones with flase edges. You need to use the hilt to designate MkIII's and the fullers to differentiate MkI and MkII, MkI's come:
    full length MkI
    Shortened MkI*
    Shortened and false edge MkI**

You can get MkII's and MkIII's with false edge * and without no *

then there are later Mk's with bowie style blades

Sounds like your blade is a I* ie a MkI shortened so th emarkigns are correct. take a look at my page dedicated to the 1907 for examples of all early modles including makers.

I looked over Your pages Carl, and will have to send You some pics to add to Your montage. This one has no fuller, 1907 styling, 12" blade with false edge, and Marked Mk I*. Give me a day or two to figure out where My camera is and I will post them here....

From the description the bayonet just sounds like the standard Indian P1907 No.1 Mk.II* (with false edge)
The date stamped on it sounds about right. Maybe someone just used the wrong Mark stamp (ie. used the I instead of the II)
The Indian stamped markings have a solid reputation for being fairly inaccurate so it wouldn't surprise me. Cheers.

That's what I was thinking. Nice to have a piece outside the norm. Most of my stuff is oddball. I don't really go for the cookie cutter stuff...
