03A3 Stock Marking
I am looking at an 03A3 that has "US" stamped in stock just forward of the buttplate. Do not recall seeng that mark before. What is the story on that imprint?

Correction. US was stamped on the rifles in the 50s and 60s by the DCM (now CMP) before sale. US stands for unserviceable stock and usually the rifles were missing a non-essential piece such as a stock band or butt swivel. SS on the other hand stood for serviceable stock and no pieces were missing from the rifle.
