An American missionary's son who became a top CIA Vietnam War-era hit-man in the jungles of Burma, Laos and Thailand has been found dead in his Chiang Mai home, a bullet in his head, a revolver in one hand and a crucifix in the other.

I guess real life is a bit more complicated than that, but any modern film will probably play up to a p.c. liberal agenda.

An interesting fellow.
I find him no worse than any soldier that killed another soldier in battle. It was war, they were the enemy, he did his job and served his country.

Young was the real deal - he didn't just drop in-country to get his ticket punched on the way up to station chief or Langley. My take on it is he helped organize the hill tribes into a fighting force, but may not have looked on them as expendables. In any case, Vang Pao cut his own deal with the suits and the CIA didn't need Young any more. And for the suits and Vang Pao, and General Ouan whose labs processed the Hmong poppy, strategy, tactics, casualties, nothing mattered so long as the money kept coming in and the opium kept going out.

The article was kind of slanted, at least the headline, but it had more meat than what was in the Times the other day. This was in the comments under the article::

"I knew Bill well and visited him several times in Chiangmai. My mother knew his parents in Burma and Bill and I visited Doc Weldon in Chiengrai before he passed away who was the author of the Country Doctor at war in laos. I was in Laos and and served in Vietnam in the early years. There was an old saying that the CIA (Christians In Action) had good intents but the US Gov was the villain.
